Sports Rundown
Quips and notes about this past week in Cincy's sports scene:
*Other than the UC win, Paul Daugherty's column was probably my favorite sports-related happening this week. What a great piece. If you haven't read it already, take a moment to do so. It wraps up the Mike Brown mentality perfectly, as well as why we will never see a winning Bengals team as long as he's at the helm.
*Why nothing's being made of the eye-gouging of Andrew Whitworth by Jacksonville's John Henderson is beyond me. The media would be all up in arms if the Bengals were any good. Personally, I think it's disgusting that someone would do that. Especially when someone's body and eyesight are the only tools one has in his profession. (thanks to cincyjungle.com for image)
*Even after the upset win over the USF Bulls on national tv, the Cats still aren't getting any love. UC only received 8 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. If they get a win against West Virginia this Saturday (in Morgantown), they have to crack the top 25, don't they?
*UC is projected to make either the International Bowl or the St. Petersburg Bowl. Whatever happened to the Orange Bowl pick from earlier this year? Granted, they're working with their 3rd (4th if you're counting Ben Mauk) string QB, but they still have a great shot at the Big East title.
*College basketball is around the corner. UC beat Canada's best team in exhibition ball last week. Good for the Cats, but it's exhibition ball. And let's be honest. I didn't know those puck-chuckers even had basketball. They must be the hockey rejects. It's too bad that they won't have Cashmere Wright this year. With all the hype between him and Yancey Gates and Mike Williams, the excitement has been building all off-season. But leave it to Dan Hoard to make you feel better:
*With the Rays making it all the way to the World Series this year, there are no excuses for the Reds to play the "small market" card anymore. That said, John Erardi has some bold ideas for Walt Jocketty this offseason. I like the Dave Roberts pitch, given the glut of young pitching the Reds have to work with. ESPN has a rundown of the free agents this offseason. I'm not real excited about any of them with exception for CC Sabathia (Reds have no shot) and Matt Holliday (also no shot). However, guys like Huston Street and Adrian Beltre would be great fits, and Jocketty can get those deals done. This, however, was shocking to me:

"The $600 million-and-counting in public money committed to Paul Brown Stadium? To you, that suggests the team should be grateful and act like it. To him, the $600 mil just meant he'd keep the NFL in Cincinnati. You paid, he stayed. To him, he's living up to his end of the deal." - Paul Daugherty, Cincinnati Enquirer*Bengals win? Holy crap! This really summed up the whole game:
"Bengals entered Sunday ranked dead last in total yardage (229.0 yards per game), and the proceeded to hang up 312 yards and three touchdowns on the Jags. When Cedric Benson can come back from the NFL dead to run for 104 yards and a touchdown against your defense, you know you've underachieved." - Don Banks, Sports Illustrated

"It's a shame he won't be able to play this season, but at least it happened early enough to give the coaching staff a chance to make adjustments. While Wright's injury was depressing, here's something that might help you feel a bit better. If Mike Williams gets an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA (see the end of column 56 for why I think that's possible), the Bearcats aren't likely to lose a single key player next season. Compare that to the 10 teams picked to finish higher than UC at BIG EAST media day." - Dan Hoard, gobearcats.com*Speaking of college b-ball, more should be made about Xavier in this town. They'll begin this season just five teams back of the top 25, and were unanimously picked to win the A-10. What's up with that? With one of the great intra-city rivals (the best?), XU deserves much more attention in this town. By the way, the pipeline for the Muskies continues to be strong with a new signing today - just awesome!

"27. Eddie Guardado, reliever. Everyday Eddie will be sought after in this market." - John Heyman, Sports Illustrated
